Halloween Countdowns on Studio 5

You can definitely start to feel the nip of fall in the air and that means Halloween is on its way!  Hooray! I even got to wear boots for the first time today!  It has become a yearly tradition for me to create Halloween Countdown Calendars to bring my favorite holiday.  These countdowns can be stuffed with treats, activities, toys, trinkets, etc to bring the Halloween spirit into your home throughout October.
I had so much fun creating four new spooky countdowns for this years Studio 5 "Countdown to Halloween Segment.  With four unique countdown ideas, there is something to fit every one's style.  There is even a kit for one of the countdowns, so putting these together can be a snap.  So, without further adieu...here are my 2012 Halloween Countdowns.....
Earlier this year, I created a bridal shower that was all about "Mason Jars".  I loved crafting with the clear containers so much that I decided to carry the theme over into Halloween.

To create my Mason Jar Countdown, I selected 13 jars in a variety of shapes and sizes.  I created variety in the colors and finishes of jars with Martha Stewart Glass Paints.  These fabulous paints come in a variety of colors and sheens, so you can get just the look you want.  I paired the glass paints with the spray attachment to create a smooth, even finish with no brush strokes.  Creating my own spray paint was so much fun!  I went to town painting.  The best part is, it doesn't smell like normal spray paint and it becomes permanent on the glass after baking.  (I baked mine at 350 for 30 minutes).  The new paint line is available through Michael's craft stores or online through the Plaid.
In addition to adding a color coat to several jars, I used My Mind's Eye's "Lost and Found Halloween" line to label and decorate the jars.
The chipboard shapes and die-cut images made this countdown come together in no time.  I also added ribbon and bling and filled each jar with a treat, toy, or spooky activity.  Get creative and make this countdown functional for your family.

I love this simple "Witchy" countdown because it is bright and fun and easy to create.  This countdown began as a plain paper mache witch hat (available at craft stores or online).  First came a coat of black spray paint and  then I mod podged a black pattern paper over the hat.  Next, I used my cropadile tool to punch holes along the brim of the hat. I tied a variety of bright ribbon colors through the holes and around candy, securing the candy to the hat brim.  I topped off my hat creation with a custom label (you can print and cut one for free below).  I created a small medallion (scroll to bottom of post to see the instructions for creating a paper medallion) and layered paper and the label together.  A few crystal stick pins and ribbon added the finishing touches.
To print your own label.  Save this image and print it to the size you would like. Cut around the edge, ink, add crystal accents as desired.  Attach with pop dots to medallion or directly to witches hat.
You can also download a PDF Version of the Witch Hat Label.
Nothing says Halloween like a spooky graveyard.  These coffin boxes are a spin off from a Martha Stewart party favor idea.  I adapted Martha's template to three different sized coffins that make a perfect little countdown.  You can easily recreate my Halloween Coffin Countdown by downloading my coffin box templates. (Note:templates are three separate files)

I used Bo Bunny Press' double dot line to create my coffins.  I love this paper because it is monochromatic and double sided. That means you get a soft pattern on the inside and out of your coffin.  I printed my coffin pattern directly onto the black sheet so that I didn't have to cut and trace, but you can easily print the pattern on white card stock, then transfer it to your coffin paper.
Cut out 13 coffins in a variety of patterned papers and sizes.  Then, assemble the boxes with a strong adhesive.  I placed a small amount of Spanish moss in each coffin before added my labels, treats and trinkets.  This adds to the spooky vintage feel.

The coffins can be finished off with my "Thirteen days of Halloween Tags" and some randomly wrapped twine.  I displayed my graveyard on an inexpensive silver tray.  Using a bed of Spanish moss helps to create stability and hold coffins upright on tray.  In addition to a treat in each box, I placed a card and trinket for that number. So, on the 1st day of Halloween a goblin gave to me....one tarantula.  On the 7th day of Halloween a good witch gave to me...7 creepy crawlers, etc.  The dollar store is a great place to stock up on duplicate holiday trinkets to fill your boxes.

Working with canvas is so much fun.  It is like creating your own little work of art.  You can download the Full Instructions and Canvas Countdown Printables  to create my Canvas Countdown on your own. or you can purchase the full kit. Kits will begin shipping on 9/20 and include the pre-designed supplies you need to create a canvas on your own.  The canvas even comes painted for you! (NOT INCLUDED IN KIT: mod podge, foam brush, candy/trinkets, distress ink and needle).

I hope you enjoy crafting up some spooky spirit for your home.  Start working on your countdowns today so they will be ready for October 1st!  Happy Haunting!
